Description

1. Oil & Gas Drilling
Sodium bentonite is an essential material for oil and gas drilling, helping improve drilling mud viscosity, cuttings suspension, and fluid circulation. Its strong hydration and swelling ability form a dense filter cake on wellbore walls, reducing fluid loss, stabilizing formations, and lowering risks such as stuck pipes or wellbore collapse.

2. Drilling Mud Additive
As a natural viscosifier and suspending agent, sodium bentonite improves gel strength and helps carry drill cuttings from deep or horizontal wells. It also protects reservoir permeability by minimizing fluid invasion. With good chemical stability and compatibility with common additives such as barite and polymers, it supports safe and efficient water-based drilling mud formulation.

3. HDD Mud Formulation
For horizontal directional drilling, sodium bentonite forms a viscous and thixotropic mud that carries cuttings, stabilizes boreholes, and reduces fluid loss. Its lubricity helps lower friction during pipe pulling, while its easy formulation and reliable performance make it suitable for HDD pipeline installation across various soil and geological conditions.

Drilling Fluid Rheology Regulation: Acts as a natural viscosifier and suspending agent, enhancing drilling mud viscosity (yield point ≥15 Pa) and gel strength to suspend cuttings, prevent wellbore collapse, and ensure smooth drilling fluid circulation in vertical/horizontal wells.

Wellbore Stabilization & Fluid Loss Control: Swells upon hydration to form a dense, impermeable filter cake (API fluid loss ≤10 mL/30 min) on wellbore walls, reducing fluid invasion into formations, mitigating shale hydration swelling, and protecting reservoir permeability.

Temperature & Chemical Stability: Maintains performance across 50–180℃ and pH 6–11; compatible with drilling fluid additives (barite, polymers, corrosion inhibitors); resists degradation under high pressure, ensuring reliability in deep oil/gas drilling and harsh downhole conditions.Sodium bentonite is a cornerstone in oil and gas drilling, offering core advantages that optimize efficiency and safety. Its exceptional hydration and rheological properties enhance drilling mud viscosity, ensuring reliable cuttings suspension and smooth circulation. The dense filter cake it forms minimizes fluid loss, stabilizes wellbores, and protects reservoir permeability. Chemically stable across harsh downhole conditions (50–180℃, pH 6–11), it is compatible with other additives. Cost-effective, abundant, and easy to formulate, it reduces operational risks (e.g., stuck pipes, collapse) while lowering overall drilling costs, making it indispensable for efficient, economical hydrocarbon exploration.
